Why part-loads get mispriced everywhere else

Big movers price around full days and full trucks, so a six-piece job either gets an inflated "minimum" or a reluctant crew watching the clock. The honest frame is simpler: a part-load is a short hourly job, usually for the two-mover crew at $250 an hour, and the skill is in the logistics around it, keys, timing, records, not in the lifting. Price the hours, do the logistics properly, and the odd little move stops being odd.

The keys-held routine

  • Handover, agreed in writing. Keys from you, an agent, a neighbour or a lockbox; alarm codes and quirks ("the laundry door sticks") noted in the job sheet.
  • A photo record, both ends. Each piece photographed wrapped and placed; doors and windows photographed locked as we leave. You see the job done without driving up.
  • The house left as found. Lights, blinds, alarm re-armed. The neighbours shouldn't be able to tell we were there, except the sofa's different.

What travels well, and what to think twice about

Travels beautifully: sofas and armchairs, beds and bedheads, dining settings, outdoor furniture at season's turn, boxed kitchen kit, linen, artwork wrapped properly, the second fridge. Think twice: pot plants in summer heat, anything that needs two homes' worth of assembly and disassembly each trip, and pianos, which are never "just one piece". If the list has a question mark on it, put it in the message and we'll answer it straight.

TIMING TRICK

Flexible-date part-loads are the cheapest kind, because we can pair yours with another small job in the same direction and the truck earns its drive both ways. If your dates float, say "flexible" in the enquiry; it's the one word that reliably saves money on this job type.

Turnover season

When a weekender sells, the part-load becomes a clear-out: furniture split between the city house, family and the buyer's "can that stay?" list. That's really a small estate move wearing beach clothes, and we run it with the same three-destination sorting method. Renovations work the same way in reverse: rooms into the garage, trades through, rooms back.
